Welcome back everyone!

As we start this new quarter, students are encouraged to get organized by cleaning out old assignments and materials that are not needed as we move forward. The Goal this final quarter of the year is to keep caught up on assignments and have the most successful quarter of the year.

We will be studying Evolution and Ecology in this quarter, both topics lend themselves to lots of interesting discussions and activities.  I invite you to continue visiting the lesson plan websites to keep updated on the happenings in biology class.

Thanks!

Ms. Peterson

We are settling into third quarter and anticipating the spring and warmer weather to get outside and explore biology first hand.  We are currently studying cell division and reproduction, which will lead nicely into our next topic: genes! The students are excited to learn about genes and be able to do some DNA extractions.  This week we will be looking at onion cells in mitotic action under microscopes we have on lend from the Science Museum of MN.

Hello LGA Biology Community!

I (with the help of my lovely colleagues) have come up with a new format for delivering weekly lessons to you.  I will periodically be updating this site as a reminder of what we are currently exploring in class, but I will be updating the google document that is linked below weekly.  By following the link below, you can access the Topic, Daily Agenda and Activities, Planner information, Powerpoints and assignments for each lesson.

I hope you find this format user-friendly and helpful!

Biology Lessons (new and improved)

Enjoy!

-Ms. Peterson

This week in biology we are continuing to explore the cellular processes necessary to all forms of life, photosynthesis and respiration.  We will be conducting an exploration using yeast as our subject of study.  This single-celled organism makes for easy observation of the production of carbon dioxide (a product of cellular respiration).  We will be able to to observe this both in bread dough as it rises and through blowing up balloons! B-day students did this last Friday and had a great time with it.

This week we will also compare and contrast photosynthesis and respiration and students will discover how closely connected these two processes are.  Next week we will be having a test, so students should be working extra hard to complete any missing assignments, especially the Cell Analogy Project if that has not been turned in yet.

Lesson for the week 1/9-1/13

It’s a new year, a time to start fresh.  This new year falls in the middle of a quarter, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use to reinvigorate us in our dedication to learning and being successful in school. This week in biology we will be learning about photosynthesis and respiration, some of the essential processes of life.  These processes require the knowledge of the organelles, chloroplasts and mitochondria, which we learned about before the holiday break.  Students will be getting their grades for their Cell Analogy Project this week.  We had some amazing projects, nice work students! We will also do some review to retrieve some of that information that may have been lost over the holiday break.  The lessons can be found at the link below.  Have a great week!

Biology lessons for the week

This week in biology there is definitely cause for celebration.  Many of the classes have earned a reward day with all the positive points they have gathered.  This also aligns nicely with a much needed break after completion of the cell analogy projects.  The projects are looking fantastic! I am extremely impressed with the level of skill and care students took in designing their projects.  There is some real talent her at Lionsgate. Nice work, students!

Biology lessons for week 12/19-12/22

We will be wrapping up our unit projects on cells this week.  Students will have a full class period as work day in the first part of the week and half a class period at the end of the week to complete their projects.  Whatever students don’t finish in class will need to be completed as homework.

We will also be moving into the topic of homeostasis, focusing on how cells and whole organisms maintain an internal environment.  This should build upon the students’ understanding of cell transport and how material move in and out of cells.

This past week we had a quiz on the material we’ve covered in unit 2.  Overall students did quite well.  Students will also be able to demonstrate understanding of cell structure and function through their cell analogy projects. I look forward to seeing what students’ final projects look like as they begin handing them in this week.

Lessons for this week (12/12-12/16)

This week in Biology we are continuing to explore cells and looking more closely at some of the processes. We will be having a quiz at the end of the week, which will cover cell parts, the membrane and transport in and out of the cell.

Students continue to work on their cell analogy projects and are doing a great job!

Biology lessons 12/5-12/9

This week in biology we will be taking a closer at the cell membrane.  We will focus on what it’s made of, what it looks like and how materials pass through. We will also be introducing our unit project, which will focus on the cell.  Students will pull together all the concepts and information they learn about the cell to create a final project in which they will create an analogy of the cell.  Students will be receiving the outline for this project on Thursday and Friday this week. I am very eager to see what the students come up with!

Biology Lessons 11/14-11/18

The end of the quarter is very near and we are working to make sure all students have assignments complete.  I encourage parents to check the parent portal!  This week in biology we will continue our exploration of the cell, looking closely at the organelles.  We will focus on the cell membrane and learn how things move into and out of cells.
