Welcome back everyone!

As we start this new quarter, students are encouraged to get organized by cleaning out old assignments and materials that are not needed as we move forward. The Goal this final quarter of the year is to keep caught up on assignments and have the most successful quarter of the year.

We will be studying chemical reactions this quarter in chemistry.  This is exciting for both students and teacher because it means lots of fun activities. I invite you to continue visiting the lesson plan website to keep updated on the happenings in Chemistry class.

Thanks!

Ms. Peterson

In chemistry students have been exploring crystals! They have used what they have learned about ionic compounds and the formation of crystals to design their own experiments.  They will use this exploration to learn the skills of writing a lab report.  We will see whose experiments will support their hypothesis as we watch the crystals grow.

Please visit the updated lessons at the link below, which include learning goals, the agenda, assignments and vocabulary.

Hello LGA Chemistry Community!

I (with the help of my lovely colleagues) have come up with a new format for delivering weekly lessons to you.  I will periodically be updating this site as a reminder of what we are currently exploring in class, but I will be updating the google document that is linked below weekly.  By following the link below, you can access the Topic, Daily Agenda and Activities, Planner information, Powerpoints and assignments for each lesson.

I hope you find this format user-friendly and helpful!

This week in chemistry we will be wrapping up our unit on the periodic table with a unit exam.  That means we will also be starting a new unit.  The next topic we will get into focuses on bonding.  Students have identified trends in the periodic table, grouped elements according to different characteristics and looked at the formation of ions.  All of these concepts will help students to infer how elements will come together to form compounds.

How to Access Your Online Chemistry Book

We have found that Internet Explorer works best to log in. Some other Internet browsers may not work properly. First, using Internet Explorer, go to this website:
school.pearsoned.com

Next, log in using the following information:
Username: PetersonChemistry
Password: Lionsgate1
(If this does not work, check your capitalization)

A tutorial window will appear- select “Enter” in the lower right-hand corner of the screen.

Click on “Pearsonchem.com”

In the upper left-hand corner of the screen, you will see four tabs. Click on the “Content” tab.

Congratulations! You have accessed the online textbook! At this point, you will select the chapter that you are studying. Click on the chapter, and and then click on “Online Student Edition”.

It’s a new year, a time to start fresh.  This new year falls in the middle of a quarter, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use to reinvigorate us in our dedication to learning and being successful in school. This week in chemistry we are in the final stretch for learning about the periodic table.  That means we will have a test right around the corner (next week).  This week we will learn about trends that can be identified in the periodic table.  We will also do some review to retrieve some of that information that may have been lost over the holiday break.  The lessons can be found at the link below.  Have a great week!

Chemistry lessons for the week

We will continue to look closely at atoms and the subatomic particles that make them up.  As we further explore electron configuration and atomic orbitals we will unfold the patterns and trends of the periodic table.  This week we will learn to write electron configurations for the elements and identify the shapes of orbitals. We will also begin to classify elements within groups and compare  and contrast the different groups of elements based on those electron configurations.

Last week we took a quiz on the discovery of the atom and investigated how early scientists and philosophers revealed the structure of atoms.  Students did well on the quiz, but will also have an opportunity to go through any questions they missed and correct them for partial credit.

Lessons for this week (12/12-12/16)

We are well into unit 2 already, which is focusing on the atomic structure and the organization of the periodic table.  The students did a great job on their final projects for unit 1.

Next week we will have a quiz at the end of the week.

The lessons for the week can be found by following the link below.

Chemistry lessons for the week

This week in Chemistry we will be putting all of our hard work together in a final project.  Students will take concepts learned in chemistry to create a movie scene, including special effects.  These special effects will require a demonstration of understanding of many of the concepts learned in chemistry.  The final projects will be due Next week.  This week we will be working on putting all the ideas students have come up with together into their final product.  Students will be given time in class this week to create their final projects within their groups.  This will give them a chance to work collaboratively and utilize the staff to answer questions.

The lessons for this week may be found at the link below:

The end of the quarter is very near and we are working to make sure all students have assignments complete.  I encourage parents to check the parent portal!  This week in chemistry we are focusing on types of chemical reactions taking time to look back at the concepts we’ve already learned throughout the quarter.
