Good morning parents and guardians!

Hope you and your student enjoyed your MEA break and found something fun to do outside of raking those pesky leaves. :)

Students in College Prep this week are learning about the admission and application process of college. Students will learn vocabulary words that are related to the college admission process, will identify the benefits of applying to colleges early on, will understand the possible costs involved and will practice filling out college applications. Students will have their completed applications kept in their transitions portfolio or can take them home and discuss with you if they should be mailing them out. We have talked in class how the college process is a family decision and that will be reinforced this week.

Students have been encouraged to bring in college applications that they are currently working on.

Greetings Parents and Guardians!

It was great to see so many of your faces at conferences last week!

Fresh from the college fair and from creating their college priority checklists, students in College Prep this week are starting to research and compare colleges of their choosing. In addition to checking off their priorities, students are documenting important information for each college  including admission deadlines, admission requirements, disability services offered, average class size and what programs of interest are available to name a few.

Students in college prep this week will be answering the question, “What are my college options?” Students will be learning about the different types of colleges that exist and the benefits/advantages of each option as far as cost, services, degree programs, etc. Students will learn what type of learner/student each college is a good fit for and begin to identify what type of college is a good fit for them currently. As a class we will determine what questions we need to ask in order to find a college that is a good fit for us. Students will identify their individual priorities for their college pick.  Students will begin to learn about and explore the variety of post-secondary options the Twin Cities has to offer.

Greetings Parents and Guardians!

The past two weeks of class your student has been learning and reviewing the expectations and procedures for transitions class, as we learn both in the classroom and the community this year. Each class has spent time working in groups, becoming familiar with one another and learning the expected behaviors of working in a group and being an effective and respectful team member.  Students have also been exposed to the activities they will be participating in their specific transitions class.

This week we are starting to jump into the specific content area of each separate transitions class.

Students in College Prep are looking at the questions, “Why go to college and how do I prepare myself for college?”  Students will learn the benefits of a college degree and identify the reasons they personally want to attend college. Students will review the college application timeline process and will identify steps they have already taken to prepare for college and steps they will need to work on this year.

Students will receive a permission slip to attend the MN College Fair at the Convention Center on Wednesday, October 5th from 8:30-12:30. Students need to receive parental/guardian consent to attend.  Students’ grades are not affected by not attending the College Fair.
