What is a balanced and healthy meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner and how does one cook it? Independent meal planning, preparation, cooking and cleaning up will be the focus of this course. Basic nutrition and food groups will be reviewed along with basic kitchen equipment use and safety. Students will compare the financial and health cost of eating out versus cooking at home. Students will learn about the wide range of grocery stores available in the community and practice how to compare prices at each store to fit one’s budget. Students will practice expected behaviors in navigating a grocery store in order to find and purchase needed ingredients. Students will learn how to find recipes both online and in cook books and will use those recipes to create shopping lists and to follow directions to make a meal. Students will be exposed to a variety of simple, healthy snacks and 30 minute or less meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
