This class is designed to help high school students develop communication skills, visual literacy, and independence through the art-making process.  In order to build a well-rounded artistic skill set, students will study the elements of art and the principles of design through discussion, writing, art making, and collaboration.  This class includes both 2-D and 3-D projects, and students will explore a variety of materials, including paint, ink, pencil, chalk, marker, plaster, etc.  As students develop socially and artistically, this class will explore art from other cultures, and the many different ways art is used to communicate.

Aside from focusing on Minnesota Arts Standards, the art department at Lionsgate Academy has three main goals:

  1. Develop Creative Problem Solvers: Through out this course we will study the creative method and use it as a problem-solving tool to guide us through the challenges we face as developing artists.
  2. Exploring the Emotive Quality of Art: Aiming to develop students’ creative self, art can serve each student’s unique needs in social skill development. This equips them with life skills in organization, visual literacy, accountability, time management, and self-reflection that will follow them as they transition into the community.
  3. Building Independence in Artistic Processes: This involves creating a balance between encouraging students’ high interest areas while learning new art techniques and skills. This class is a safe place for students to express their unique ideas and sense of humor!

Drawing is all about using certain “tools”—the elements of art and principles of design—to create the illusion of reality, fantasy, and abstraction.  This class leads students toward independence in their drawing skills by studying the elements and principles, exploring a variety of materials, and creating theme-based artwork.  Materials used in this class will include pencil, ink, chalk, oil pastel, paint, and many unconventional drawing materials.  As students gain independence in their creative decision-making, focus will move from technical skill to content and meaning.  Students in this class will also learn skills of art criticism through group discussions and self-reflections about their own work, that of their peers, and work from established artists.

Aside from focusing on Minnesota Arts Standards, the art department at Lionsgate Academy has three main goals:

  1. Develop Creative Problem Solvers: Through out this course we will study the creative method and use it as a problem-solving tool to guide us through the challenges we face as developing artists.
