The goal of this yearlong high school art class is to develop our perception of space by exploring how sculpture interacts with the surrounding environment. The process of creating sculpture is often similar to solving a puzzle. Students will have to use critical thinking strategies to figure out how to bring their ideas to life! We will be learning how to manipulate a variety of tactile materials, including: wire, plaster, paper, wood, clay, “found objects”, adhesives, and more! While we will focus on building, sculpting, and playing with space—some drawing will still be a part of the process. This course also integrates art criticism, art history, aesthetics, and develops an art vocabulary. Detailed, step-by-step skill building activities will give students an understanding of the elements and principles of art that deal with sculpture.

Aside from focusing on Minnesota Arts Standards, the Art Department at Lionsgate Academy has three main goals:

  1. Develop Creative Problem Solvers: Through out this course we will study the creative method and use it as a problem-solving tool to guide us through the challenges we face as developing artists.
  2. Exploring the Emotive Quality of Art: Aiming to develop students’ creative self, art can serve each student’s unique needs in social skill development. This equips them with life skills in organization, visual literacy, accountability, time management, and self-reflection that will follow them as they transition into the community.
  3. Building Independence in Artistic Processes: This involves creating a balance between encouraging students’ high interest areas while learning new art techniques and skills. This class is a safe place for students to express their unique ideas and sense of humor!

  • Introducing...a Choice-Based Classroom! - March 22, 2012 - Ms. Pautsch

I would like to introduce you to an art education approach that I am starting to integrating into my Computer Art Class for the rest of the school year. I’m VERY excited about this change and anticipate seeing AMAZING work come out of my students!

A Choice-Based Art Classroom, also known as TAB (Teaching Artistic Behavior), is an educational approach that offers a structured way of offering students more choice in their artistic medium and meaning. Students will have opportunities to create art based on their own interests and self-created motivations. It’s no longer about giving them my ideas and assisting in the recreation process…instead, students are coming up with artistic solutions to the problems that they create themselves! I’m very excited to show you the results of this change!

You can learn more about TAB here. Don’t forget to check out my lesson plans, which are updated weekly.

This yearlong middle school art class is dedicated to serving students who are new to the artistic process. In this class, students will explore how to successfully function both socially and creatively in an art class. We will learn how to follow step-by-step directions, get acquainted with unusual textures, explore the creative process, and build the basic knowledge and confidence needed to be successful in an art class. This class will introduce artistic risk-taking, creative problem solving, and develop a safe social environment. Adapted projects aim to develop each unique set of strengths and challenges to prepare students for creative expression and other art classes in the future.

Thank you to Dennis and Diane, our guest artists from last week! We got to hear a lot of interesting stories and learn about the Native American culture. Thanks for showing us all your great beading work! This week we continue working on our Faux Glass Sculpture as we continue to explore world renowned glass sculptor, Dale Chihuly.
