In this class, middle school students will begin to build a strong base-knowledge of art and the creative process by participating in an in-depth exploration of the elements of art and principles of design. Projects are highly structured but still allow room for students to express and expand their creative self. Each project focuses on the technical aspect of the materials, the creative process, builds an artistic vocabulary, and ties in an art history reference. Materials used in this class will include pencil, ink, marker, paint, paper mache, and many more. Students will experience a wide variety of different genres of art as they develop a portfolio of creative tools to carry with them into future art classes.
Aside from focusing on Minnesota Arts Standards, the art department at Lionsgate Academy has three main goals:
- Develop Creative Problem Solvers: Through out this course we will study the creative method and use it as a problem-solving tool to guide us through the challenges we face as developing artists.
- Exploring the Emotive Quality of Art: Aiming to develop students’ creative self, art can serve each student’s unique needs in social skill development. This equips them with life skills in organization, visual literacy, accountability, time management, and self-reflection that will follow them as they transition into the community.
- Building Independence in Artistic Processes: This involves creating a balance between encouraging students’ high interest areas while learning new art techniques and skills. This class is a safe place for students to express their unique ideas and sense of humor!
