This yearlong middle school art class is dedicated to serving students who are new to the artistic process. In this class, students will explore how to successfully function both socially and creatively in an art class. We will learn how to follow step-by-step directions, get acquainted with unusual textures, explore the creative process, and build the basic knowledge and confidence needed to be successful in an art class. This class will introduce artistic risk-taking, creative problem solving, and develop a safe social environment. Adapted projects aim to develop each unique set of strengths and challenges to prepare students for creative expression and other art classes in the future.
Aside from focusing on Minnesota Arts Standards, the Art Department at Lionsgate Academy has three main goals:
- Develop Creative Problem Solvers: Through out this course we will study the creative method and use it as a problem-solving tool to guide us through the challenges we face as developing artists.
- Exploring the Emotive Quality of Art: Aiming to develop students’ creative self, art can serve each student’s unique needs in social skill development. This equips them with life skills in organization, visual literacy, accountability, time management, and self-reflection that will follow them as they transition into the community.
- Building Independence in Artistic Processes: This involves creating a balance between encouraging students’ high interest areas while learning new art techniques and skills. This class is a safe place for students to express their unique ideas and sense of humor!
